Maureen and I went to a wedding over Labor Day weekend, downstate in Sullivan, Illinois. Her ex-roommate Carol got married to this guy Andrea, who is from Rome. He lives in the Chicago area now, and he’s moving down to Sullivan to be with his bride.

From Rome, to Chicago, to Sullivan. Now, to me, that’s love. I mean, Sullivan’s not a bad place. But tall corn country is a serious choice, coming from, well, Rome. It’s a context thing.

The wedding was beautiful. These two love each other. Andrea was busy finding things to appreciate about Sullivan. Not in a forced way, he just seems like a naturally happy guy, and here he is.

Carol and Andrea are Maureen’s close friends. I haven’t gotten to know them much yet. I’ve heard wonderful things. I look forward to getting to know them better.

sweet Maureen

Maureen and I are back together. We were together, and then we were apart, and then we were sort of together, and now we are decidedly together.

Maureen is my girlfriend. We met at Critical Mass last year. She’s sweet, and smart, and funny, and cute. We’re in this scary sort of oh-my-God-could-this-be-it love; we’re both a little too old and self-aware to get lost in the thing. Which is good and bad: good because we can be straight with each other and sensible in powerful ways, and we can work through lots of things. Bad because we are aware of all the ways things go wrong in life and relationships. It takes more courage to love this way, to love and not forget yourself.

But we love each other all the same. Maybe this is what it takes. I hope it is.
